The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a globally recognised assessment of English proficiency for non-native speakers, valued for its fairness, consistency, and quick turnaround. Pearson offers a family of tests tailored to different goals — PTE Academic for study and skilled visas, and PTE Core for Canadian immigration (IRCC) purposes.
PTE Academic is the version most learners in Jaffna sit for. It's used by universities, colleges, and government bodies to evaluate listening, reading, speaking, and writing ability in an academic context, and is a recognised route for UK, Australian, New Zealand, and Canadian study and work visas — including the UK's PTE Academic UKVI option.
Since August 2025, Pearson has updated the PTE Academic format: it now runs as a single continuous session of about two hours and fifteen minutes, with two new task types added to Speaking & Writing. Scoring blends AI marking with human oversight on the Global Scale of English (10–90, in increments of 10), and most candidates receive results within about 48 hours.
